I have been gone for two weeks doing my National Guard thing. This is my last summer of doing Guard, after 35 years of military service and two wars I am retiring in November. I will not miss it. Not only will I not miss the military, I will not miss losing two weeks in the summer and a weekend a month, or the occasional non-recreational visit to strange foreign lands. I got to see a lot of the world in the last 35 years courtesy of the military; Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Okinawa, Korea, Iraq, the Philippines and some interesting place in the U.S. I would not go to on purpose. Those 35 years gave me some good memories and some really bad memories, but all in all it was worthwhile. And, personally speaking, it was something that I felt I had to do. I am not a flag waving patriot but I know intimately what the rest of the world is like and I like the U.S. the way it is. I feel my 35 years were well spent keeping it that way.
It will be so nice to be able to commit my summers to reading, writing and maybe doing some ‘rifmatic. Maybe I will get kinky and start on that PhD again. What I would do with it I have no idea; I have the best possible job in the world right now and plan to die in this job. Maybe just to keep my brain alive and have a new stupid challenge. I picture twenty years from now a kid walking into my office and finding me dead of a heart attack and a blue screen of death from Windows 28 on my monitor.
